— Visual attention

The element draws attention to a word or passage without giving it semantic importance. The screen reader does not change intonation. It is a purely visual signal: product names in a review, keywords in a summary, action terms in instructions.

When to use it

You want to bold a product name, a technical term without emphasis, or a visual keyword in a context where (importance) and (emphasis) do not fit.

What you gain

Accessibility: screen readers treat neither nor differently by default. The distinction is in the code: = visual attention, = semantic importance. In practice, the result is the same for the user.

Code example

This cream contains retinol and vitamin C.
