<blockquote> — The block quotation

The <blockquote> element represents a long quotation from another source. It forms a standalone block, unlike <q> which is inline.

When to use it

You want to quote an entire paragraph from an article, book, or speech. You want the quotation to be visually and semantically separated from the rest of your text. Use the cite attribute to point to the source.

What you gain

Accessibility: screen readers announce entering and leaving the quotation block, helping users distinguish your voice from the one you are quoting.

Code example

<blockquote cite="https://example.com/article">
  <p>The best way to predict the future is to invent it.</p>
  <footer>— <cite>Alan Kay</cite></footer>
</blockquote>
