<hgroup>
Associate a heading with its subtitle without breaking the hierarchy
<hgroup> — The heading group
The <hgroup> element associates a heading (<h1>-<h6>) with a subtitle or tagline (<p>). It signals that both form a single heading block, not two separate pieces of content.
When to use it
You want to display a heading followed by a subtitle, tagline, or lead-in. For example, an article title paired with an introductory sentence.
What you gain
Accessibility: without <hgroup>, a subtitle in a <p> is announced as an orphan paragraph between the heading and the content. With <hgroup>, assistive technologies know the <p> is part of the heading block. Support still varies across screen readers (NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, TalkBack): test before relying on it.
Code example
<hgroup>
<h1>Accessible forms</h1>
<p>A practical guide to labels, errors, and focus management</p>
