<del> — The deleted text

The <del> element represents text that has been removed from a document. It combines naturally with <ins> to show edits. The datetime attribute indicates when the deletion took place.

When to use it

You want to show a correction, a price change, a content update, or an edit history. Combine with <ins> to make the replacement explicit.

What you gain

Accessibility: NVDA and JAWS can announce "deleted" when they encounter <del> (depending on verbosity settings). It is one of the few inline elements that screen readers handle semantically.

Code example

<p>
  The conference is on
  <del datetime="2026-03-15">March 20</del>
  <ins datetime="2026-03-15">March 27</ins>.
</p>
